Ice water milk cooling system (IB & DIB)

ICE WATER MILK COOLING SYSTEM  (IB & DIB)

The ice water milk cooling system, represents today the best milk cooling system in relation to the conservation of the milk quality. Thanks to the ice water temperature of 0.5-1°C, there is no risk of milk freezing into the tank and in addition, the possibility to collect the cooling energy in several hours allows the use of smaller cooling units with less power request.

Advantages of ice water milk cooling system in comparison with a traditional system:

  • The cooling from 35 to 10°C is 50% faster.
  • It is possible to cool also small quantities of milk without any freezing risk.
  • It allows the power management for the cooling in different times compared to the milking phase.
  • The ice can be rebuilt through the use of smaller compressors. The electric request is therefore lower
  • The energy’s use during the night allows the farmer to save money by using a lower electrical tariff.
  • The tank cleaning is easier thanks to the absence of frozen milk.
  • Milk can be collected anytime even during the milking phase when cooled immediately.
  • The tank can be repaired in every components, evaporator included.
INSTANT MILK COOLING
The ice water provided by the ice under the tank (IB) of from an ice builder (PIB), is pumped through a tubular pre-cooling or heat plate exchanger, in counter-current with the milk from the milking parlor.

Instant cooling causes an immediate decrease of the milk temperature to the storage temperature.

Advantages:
–  Milk is immediately cooled below the critical limit of 10° with ice water, stopping immediately the bacterial growth
– Mixing low temperature during on-goings milkings reduces drastically the possibility of bacterial growth

This type of milk cooling is applied also when we are in presence of the vertical milking tank (stainless steel silos ) In this case the milk is cooled with the cooling system and it is sent to the vertical tank already in storage temperature. The tank cannot cool the milk, but he has equipped a cooling system on 2/3 of its height with the aim of keeping the milk at the storage temperature, blocking a potential thermal increase for instance an environmental temperature particularly high.

SEPARATE ICE BUILDER (PIB)
The control unit for the ice production separated from the tank is the solution to be applied with tanks not equipped with an independent ice builder system. Usually it is combined with instant milk cooling  of big dimensions , both with horizontal and vertical tanks.

The calculation of the capacity of the ice builder depends on the circumstances (ice formation during the night only or a presence of pre-cooling ).
